Gachiakuta’s story begins the defining moment of Regto’s death. This is the event that kick starts Rudo’s journey.
When a random assassin stabbed Regto and ran off with his book (I hope you noticed the book), Rudo was the one who took the fall for the crime – literally – into the pit and into a whole new world.
However, for anime watchers, the nagging question will surely be the identity of Regto’s killer. What had Regto’s kind foster father done to deserve such a fate?
Regto’s death might be seen as a one off incident which depicts the brutal world of the tribesfolk on the Sphere. But trust me, there was something more going on in the background.
Let’s get to it!
Who killed Regto in Gachiakuta?
The only clue Rudo has is the image of a mysterious masked person who was at the scene.

However, as the story progresses, we realize this person is the mysterious ‘angel’, one of the few characters who can cross the boundary and come and go as he pleases to the Sphere and the Pit (the ground). It was during one of these trips to the sphere that he murdered Regto.
But that is not all, the biggest twist of all comes in chapter 110, when the identity of this ‘angel’ or rather, Regto’s killer is revealed. To keep it short, the one who killed Regto is none other than Rudo’s teammate in the Akuta Cleaners, Tamsy Caines.
However, this information is only privy to the readers and not Rudo himself. Our protagonist still views Tamsy as a reliable part of the Cleaners who looks out for him.
On the surface, Tamsy is the definition of calm and collected. He is always polite, speaks formally, and carries out his duties as a Cleaner with quiet efficiency. He presents the image of a professional who is simply there to do his job and support his team. But this calm exterior hides a deeply disturbed and manipulative mind.
While the Tamsy reveal might have been a surprise (well, a second surprising reveal when it comes to his character), Kei Urana had left us a big hint connecting the two.
In the very first chapter and first episode of the anime, after the Angel has killed Regto, he is seen picking up a book. In a close-up panel, it’s clear that the glove on his right hand is limp and empty where the little finger should be. This small detail is easy to miss, but it’s the most concrete piece of evidence.
Down the line, in chapter 92, titled Tamsy’s day off, we see that his little finger is also cut off. On top of that, in chapter 110, the rope doll that Tamsy created, slightly resembled the angel and the person who killed Regto.
In chapter 111, after the reveal, we also see that Tamsy indeed is in possession of the
While we unconvered the identity of the person behind Regto’s death, an important question remains. Why did Tamsy do it?
Why did Tamsy kill Regto?
What at first seems like a random act of violence is slowly revealed to be a calculated move. And it was designed to be far more than a move meant for selfish gain.
Being the psycho that he is, Tamsy admits in his monologue from chapter 110 that from his perspective, killing Regto was an act of love aimed at Rudo. He believes that Rudo has a “shell” around his heart and that the only way to help him is to shatter it with extreme trauma. His ultimate goal is to “bring out whatever is there inside” Rudo.
This goal directly connects to an earlier scene with Semiu, a Cleaner who has the ability to see a person’s inner nature. When she evaluated Rudo, she was terrified by what she saw inside him, hinting at something sinister lying dormant in him.
According to Tamsy, Regto’s murder was a partial success, noting that it almost broke Rudo completely, referencing the moment Rudo was consumed by pure rage before he was dropped into the pit. He almost managed to bring out what was inside of him probably.

Tamsy’s monologue also confirms he is far from finished. He views the murder of Regto as just the first step in a long process of “teasing” Rudo to his breaking point. He coldly considers that he might have to kill another person close to Rudo to get the desired reaction.
